Grant Writing Intern

General Description:

DC Central Kitchen (www.dccentralkitchen.org) is a community kitchen. We recycle more than one ton of surplus food each day that would otherwise go to waste and turn it into 4,000 meals for the hungry in the greater Washington, DC region. Among the people preparing these meals are the students of our Culinary Job Training program; once homeless and hungry individuals themselves, these aspiring men and women are equipped with professional and life skills. DC Central Kitchen uses the existing ingredients of our society to strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities.

DC Central Kitchen also supports a national arm in The Campus Kitchens Project (www.campuskitchens.org)—a student-powered hunger relief organization. CKP has locations at 12 campuses, each of which provide hundreds weekly meals to in-need populations.

Specific Responsibilities:

DCCK seeks an intern in our Development Department to assist with the management of our fundraising efforts on a local level. Duties will include:

  • Help maintain grant calendar – Update deadlines, reports, status, request amounts, etc.
  • Research grant prospects – utilizing the Foundation Center and other resources, work with the Development staff to determine needs and seek out new prospects for funding
  • Learn the language of DCCK – Working with the Development staff, you will have the opportunity to both learn the current language used to describe the kitchen’s work, and to help shape new phraseology.
  • Grant Writing – Working with previous templates and your own fresh ideas, work with the Development staff to write LOI’s (Letter of Inquiry), Grant Proposals and reports.
  • Collaborating on newsletters for DCCK (monthly) & CKP (quarterly)

We seek an intern who is self-motivated, possesses excellent written and oral communication skills, and is interested in being part of an innovative nonprofit organization. Campus Kitchens Project Development Intern

General Description:

The Campus Kitchens Project (www.campuskitchens.org) is a student-powered hunger relief organization. Based in Washington, DC, CKP is the national arm of DC Central Kitchen (www.dccentralkitchen.org), a DC-based community kitchen that provides 4,500 meals daily to in-need individuals in the Greater DC area, and offers a Culinary Job Training program to inspire people toward self-sufficiency. Currently, CKP oversees 12 campus-based Campus Kitchens as they fulfill their mission of recovering unused food, strengthening communities, empowering families and individuals, and educating a new generation of service-minded adults through empowering college and high school students to lead the program. CKP also works with prospective Colleges and Universities to set up new Campus Kitchens.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. CKP fundraising history:
    • Review past CKP grant proposals
    • Become familiar with CKP development tools: grants calendar, prospect sheets, first contact sheet
    • Utilize the Foundation Center
  2. CKP Grant Writing:
    • Assist with management of the national grants calendar
    • Research and cultivate possible funding prospects
    • Prepare grant proposals to support current and prospective Campus Kitchens
  3. CKP donor cultivation:
    • Manage CKP donor database and process Thank You notes
    • Assist with managing relationships with top donors
    • Attend community networking activities to cultivate possible donor relationship.

Community Voicemail Assistant

Specific Responsibilities:

Must have a great attitude and a passion for working in the Non-Profit sector to help empower individuals to become self sufficient through the Community Voice Mail Program. Various duties include, but not limited to, clerical and administrative tasks, creating and designing a CVM Newsletter, researching potential community partners for CVM, assisting with planning program events to retain and recruit agencies, all while keeping the business confidential. Local Grant Writing Intern

Specific Responsibilities:

Learn the development process of a robust nonprofit organization. Research, cultivate, and write proposals to recruit new local funders to support DC Central Kitchen – a DC-based hunger relief and empowerment organization that takes new an innovative approach to inspiring self-sufficiency and providing hunger relief.

Qualifications Needed:

We seek an intern who is self-motivated, possesses excellent communication skills, and is interested in being part of a growing nonprofit organization. Additional qualifications include:

First Helping:

East of the River Outreach Internship

Description:

First Helping is a street-level outreach program sponsored by DC Central Kitchen. With a satellite office based in Northwest Washington, the program provides homeless service to hundreds of clients throughout the city living on the streets and other places unsuitable for habitation. By using food as a tool, their workers empower those in need to access services that address the core reasons for their homelessness. This position provides outreach services to homeless men, women, and families in the District of Columbia in the area East-of-the-River.

Responsibilities:

  1. Outreach Services- Material Assistance:
    • Facilitate and execute three street-side breakfast programs.
    • Make personal contacts with homeless/low-income men, women, and families while developing a positive foundation to respectfully engage these individuals in a social service context.
    • Distribution of blankets, gloves, long underwear, toiletries, bus tokens, and other items which aid clients living on the streets
  2. Outreach Services- Advocacy in the Continuum of Care:
    • Maintain contact with clients as needed as they progress their way through the continuum of care.
  3. Other Duties:
    • Perform other tasks and projects as assigned by the First Helping Project Director.

Additional Information:

This position is currently in need of three interns committed to at least two or three-four hour shifts Monday thru Friday from either 7:45am to 12pm and/or 1pm to 4pm. The scheduling is flexible in terms of days.

  • substance abuse;
  • working with clients of diverse economic, ethnic, racial, sexual, and social backgrounds;

Foggy Bottom Outreach Internship

Description:

First Helping is a street-level outreach program sponsored by DC Central Kitchen. With a satellite office based in Northwest Washington, the program provides homeless service to hundreds of clients throughout the city living on the streets and other places unsuitable for habitation. By using food as a tool, their workers empower those in need to access services that address the core reasons for their homelessness. Services can range from simple referrals to prolonged and intensive case management for those individuals assessed to be most at risk. This position provides outreach services to homeless men, women, and families in the District of Columbia at the Foggy Bottom Breakfast Program and within the Golden Triangle area (between Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire Avenues).

Responsibilities:

  1. Outreach Services- Material Assistance:
    • Facilitate and execute street-side breakfast program.
    • Make personal contacts with homeless/low-income men, women, and families while developing a positive foundation to respectfully engage these individuals in a social service context.
    • Distribution of blankets, gloves, long underwear, toiletries, bus tokens, and other items which aid clients living on the streets
  2. Outreach Services- Advocacy in the Continuum of Care:
    • Maintain contact with clients as needed as they progress their way through the continuum of care.
    • Researching/compiling information on the various services and resources available to the homeless residents of the District of Columbia.
  3. Other Duties:
    • Perform other tasks and projects as assigned by the First Helping Program Manager.

Additional Information:

This position is currently in need of two to three interns committed to at least two to three days of service Monday through Friday, beginning at the Foggy Bottom Breakfast Program (8:15- 9:30 AM) with hours for the remainder of the day being flexible.

  • Street outreach, adhering to a low to no barrier, non-judgmental philosophy, concentrating efforts on those individuals most at risk;
  • The complex challenges faced by individuals suffering from chronic homelessness;
  • Working with clients of diverse economic, ethnic, racial, sexual, and social backgrounds;
  • Working with social services in order to move clients through the continuum of care.
